Description
The objective was to devise and deliver the restoration of four historic carriages from derelict condition to original splendour in just 6 months. This involved the identification of candidate vehicles, brokering of the plan with respective owners, preparing plans for the overhaul, facilitating filming opportunities, and coordinating the project to ensure completion within a strict six months’ timeline – a challenge indeed! The selected vehicles were a timber coach on the Isle of Wight dating from 1864, Queen Victoria’s Royal Saloon from 1887, a teak mainline carriage built by Nigel Gresley in 1912, and a modern Pullman 1st Class Saloon built in 1960. The programme was fronted by TV personality Peter Snow and concluded with all four carriages coupled together hauled by a steam locomotive. The subsequent 5-part TV series attracted huge audiences.
